Can you Remove Calluses at Home

by Karan Gupta 14 Dec 2022

What is a foot callus?

A callus is a hardened area on the skin that develops as a result of friction or pressure. This could be caused by walking barefoot in high heels, standing or walking on hard surfaces for a long period of time, or wearing shoes with poor arch support. Foot calluses can be found on the soles of your feet, between your toes and around the heels. They are generally dry and scaly and can be very painful to wear shoes or walk barefoot.

What causes foot calluses?

Calluses are thick patches of dead skin on the tops of your feet. They're most common on the ball of your foot, but they can develop anywhere on your feet if you have a lot of friction-causing activities or wear shoes with poor ventilation. Calluses are caused by friction from walking barefoot on hard surfaces or wearing shoes with poor ventilation. You may also get them from rubbing against something rough, such as a rough towel or a rock in the sand. You may not realize that you have calluses until one day, you discover them and feel pain when you walk or go barefoot. In some cases, calluses don't even become apparent until years later, when they start to hurt.

What is the best tool to remove calluses?

Several tools can be effective in removing foot calluses, including:

Foot file:

A foot file is a tool with a rough surface that can gently scrape away callused skin on the soles of your feet.

Pumice stone:

A pumice stone is a natural volcanic rock with a rough, abrasive surface that can soften and remove calluses.

Foot scrubber:

A foot scrubber is a tool with a rough surface that can be used to exfoliate and remove calluses on the soles of your feet.

Pedicure rasp:

A pedicure rasp is a metal tool with a rough surface that can remove calluses on your feet' soles.

The best tool for removing foot calluses will depend on your personal preference and the severity of the calluses. It is important to use caution when using any tool to remove calluses, as over-filing or scrubbing can damage the skin and cause pain or irritation. If you have diabetes or poor circulation, it is especially important to be careful when removing calluses. You may have decreased sensitivity in your feet and may be unable to feel if you are causing any damage. In these cases, it is best to seek the advice of a healthcare professional before attempting to remove calluses on your own.

Foot files are one of the most effective ways to remove calluses from the bottom and sides of your feet because they work quickly and effectively at removing the tough buildup caused by being on your feet all day long. Foot files are small brushes with fine bristles used to remove dead skin cells and smooth out rough patches on the skin surface. Several foot files are available, including manual (handheld) and electric versions. These tools should be used properly on broken skin as they can cause abrasions and irritation if applied incorrectly. Dr Foot's foot file calluses remover contains a non-slip handle and 100% surgical-grade stainless steel, which also helps remove dead cells.

How can you file down a callus?

To use a foot file to remove calluses on your feet, follow these steps:

  1. Soak your feet in warm water for 10-15 minutes to soften the skin. This will make it easier to file the calluses.
  2. Dry your feet thoroughly.
  3. Use the foot file to gently scrape away the callused skin on the soles of your feet, taking care not to apply too much pressure. You can also use a pumice stone or a foot scrubber to soften and remove the calluses.
  4. Repeat the process until the calluses are smooth and the skin is no longer rough.
  5. After filing, apply a moisturizing cream or lotion to your feet to help keep the skin hydrated and prevent further callus formation.

It's important to be gentle when using a foot file, as over-filing can damage the skin and cause pain or irritation.
